Passport photo-taking tips
Follow these guidelines to create the perfect passport picture.
Consider the distance
Keep your front-facing camera 16–20 inch (40–50 cm) away from the face. For rear cameras, keep a 4–6 foot (1–2 meter) distance.
Keep your head and body straight
Look directly into the camera and avoid tilting your body. Remember, portrait mode is unacceptable for passport photos.
Prepare good lighting
Take your passport photos in a daylight setting, like near a window on a sunny day. Shadows on your face or in the background are not permitted.

Did you know that the Socialist Republic of Vietnam is considered the most affordable country to travel to in Southeast Asia? Or that it is one of the world’s largest coffee producers? Vietnam is also a very safe tourist destination, full of natural beauty and incredible scenery, as well as a rich and heroic history.
However, travelling there takes some effort. Most nationalities, including the United States, need a visa to enter the country. We here at Photo AiD will help you with the visa application process and taking the perfect photograph for your Vietnamese visa. If you use our photo tool, getting your visa will be a piece of cake!
Vietnamese visa photo - size & requirements
To avoid having your visa application rejected, it is important to take the right photograph. You have to meet the requirements regarding photo dimensions, background colour, head position, facial expression and the general quality of the picture. Read carefully and start the process of taking the Vietnamese visa photo by yourself!
Photo size visa for Vietnam
The dimensions of the Vietnam visa photo are 4 cm in width and 6 cm in height. This is a standard size of passport photos in Vietnam. The appropriate format is JPG and not bigger than 2MB. The visa photo should be taken no longer than 6 months before applying for the Vietnam visa.
Color
Your visa photos must be in color. Using digital filters or trying to beautify the photo in any way will cause rejection. Don’t risk that your visa photo will be rejected! Use our photo editor instead, which edits the visa photos to the official Vietnamese requirements. Background
The background should be a uniform and plain shade of white, without any patterns or shadows. No one and nothing else can appear in the background. The picture must show only the applicant.
Lighting
The lighting in your visa picture should be even and smooth, without any shadows or glare. Avoid using a flash, which can cause not only shadows and glare but which can also cause the red-eye effect, which will certainly get your picture rejected. Take photos in diffused daylight instead, by standing near a window with gauze curtains, or outside on a cloudy day.
Position
Face the camera and relax your shoulders. The full face, neck and upper part of shoulders must be clearly visible. Your head should be straight as the frontal view is required; the head cannot be tilted to any side. A picture where the face is not facing the camera, or photos with the head tilted and the eyes closed, will be denied.
Facial expression
Smiling, especially showing teeth, is forbidden. Keep your mouth closed, and keep a neutral expression on your face.
Eyes and glasses
The eyes should be visible and kept open, looking directly at the camera. This means that glasses are only allowed if they leave your eyes visible. Tinted lenses are not allowed.
Clothes
White clothing should be avoided as it’s likely to blend with the background. Wear something in darker colors.
Hair and headwear
The only scarves, hats and other head accessories permitted are those worn every day for religious or medical reasons. Hats and caps worn for fashion are not allowed. Applicants with long hair can wear their hair either up or down as long as it doesn’t cover the face.
Beard
Applicants who normally wear a beard should keep it for the Vietnamese visa photo. Try not to change your look right before traveling. .
Vietnamese visa photo for babies and young children
Children, like their parents, also need to have a visa with the right photograph. Here are the requirements regarding Vietnamese baby visa photos:
- Only the child should appear in the photo; neither parents, guardians nor any other people are allowed to appear in the photo with the child.
- Also, there cannot be any objects such as toys, pacifiers or bottles in the photo of the child.
- The child's eyes have to be open and looking at the camera.
- Infants should be laid down on a white plain sheet, while children can sit in a chair; but remember, the chair cannot be seen in the picture.

It is possible to save time and money by taking your Vietnamese visa photos yourself. Simply download the Photo AiD app (in the App Store for iPhones or GooglePlay for Androids), or use our Photo AiD website. Look for “Vietnamese visa” among our many available templates to choose from.

Common mistakes on a visa photo to Vietnam
It’s good to know some of the disqualifying mistakes people make when applying for their visas, so that you can avoid making the same mistakes. Take a look at the Seven Most Common Mistakes:
- Submitting a “selfie.” Selfies are not usable because they are too close. The camera should be about four feet (one to one-and-a-half meters) away from your face to prevent distortion.
- Smiling. Please keep your facial expression natural and neutral, without smiling, frowning or showing your teeth.
- The wrong background. Remember, the background must be white (or off-white) without any shadows, patterns or wrinkles.
- Not looking directly at the camera. It is important to make eye contact with the camera lens. Please look directly into the lens.
- Head turned or tilted. Remember that the document photo must be “en-face” or squarely facing the camera. No dramatic angles, please.
- Hidden eyes. Long hair and big bangs must be combed up above the eyebrows so that the eyes are fully visible. If you choose to wear glasses, make sure that they don’t hide your eyes with shadows, glare or overly-thick frames; best is to remove your glasses before taking the photo.
- Damaged prints. Do not submit photographs that are creased or torn, or not printed on quality photographic paper.
