Consider the distance
Keep your front-facing camera 16–20 inch (40–50 cm) away from the face. For rear cameras, keep a 4–6 foot (1–2 meter) distance.
Keep your head and body straight
Look directly into the camera and avoid tilting your body. Remember, portrait mode is unacceptable for passport photos.
Prepare good lighting
Take your passport photos in a daylight setting, like near a window on a sunny day. Shadows on your face or in the background are not permitted.
Passport photo app
We are allowed to take and prepare it on our own, using just our smartphones and an online passport photo maker which is free to download from the AppStore or Google Play Store.
Passport style photo for ID cards
If you want to apply for any kind of identification document, including a passport, ID card, some permissions and licences, you are required to submit an application form and a photo of yourself. In most cases, the list of requirements for a given document’s photo is based on the biometric photo requirements. And you are perfectly able to take this photo at your home, office or place of your choosing. All you need to take a photo is:
- a smartphone with a camera or just a digital camera or tablet (webcams cannot be used),
- a helpful person as selfies are not accepted,
- a tripod if you do not want to ask, or can’t ask, anybody for help,
- Irish photo requirements which we provide you with below,
- daylight (preferably) and 2 free square metres,
- online passport photo application.
There are some rules you need to respect (head position, facial expression etc.) but you don’t have to worry about the size, crop and background. All you have to do is to pose correctly and remove forbidden items if needed and then upload your picture to the smart online photo app and choose a specific photo template. The tool automatically crops and resizes photos, adjusts the background and at the end verifies if the image is acceptable.
Once you upload your picture, you will have it ready in about 3 seconds. And the best part: you only pay a portion of the price you would pay in a photo studio or photo booth!
Passport Photo Online
If you plan to travel internationally, you need a passport. As an Irish citizen, you have the general right to get your travelling document under no additional conditions. You need to fill in and provide an application form and also present some documents. The last request is providing a photograph that meets the strictly indicated requirements such as size and others.
An Irish passport photograph’s required size is 45 mm in height and 35 mm in width. For the paper application, you need 4 (four) prints. If you want to apply for your passport online, you must send a digital photo. Its size in pixels must be at least 600 dpi. It may be in colour or black and white.
Find a template for an Irish passport photo with the Photo AiD app downloaded on your phone and have it done in 3 seconds!
A template for a visa photo
With your Irish passport you may travel visa-free to many countries. Sometimes you are obliged to ask for a visa - a document permitting you to enter a specific country and stay there for a given period. Usually, the requirements for a visa photo are the same as for a biometric passport photo but there are certain countries that have special demands when it comes to issuing visas.
It doesn’t matter if you are going to China, Malaysia, USA, Russia or Japan - we know exactly how your visa photo should look.
We have international templates of photos for:
- Chinese visa,
- Canadian visa,
- Japanese visa,
- Russian visa,
- US visa,
- Malaysian visa,
- Thailand visa,
- German visa,
- Schengen visa.
Irish driving licence photo
Getting a driving licence is one of the most significant moments for many young people. To get your driving licence, you need to provide the required your passport-style photo that meets certain requirements set by the National Driver Licence Service. If you want to renew your driving licence or some of your personal data has changed - a new photo is also required.
We give you the opportunity of picking the photo template and once you upload your picture the artificial intelligence will do the rest. You can be sure that the picture in your new driving licence will satisfy all the requirements.
ID card photo
Generally speaking, your photo for a new document must show your current appearance and not be older than 6 (six) months. This means that you can use the same picture for different documents, such as membership cards, badges, licences, diplomas etc.
Once you have prepared the photo for your ID with PhotoAiD, you will receive a template of your picture ready to print straight to your email address. You can print as many copies as you wish and use the photo multiple times.
Passport photo DIY - take it at home
We present a short guide and after reading it you will be perfectly able to take the correct photo.
Check out the passport photo requirements in a nutshell. In 5 minutes you will know:
- how to correctly pose in the photo,
- how to erase the wrong background,
- how to change the background’s colour to the required one,
- what the rules are within regards to clothing, eyeglasses and head coverings,
- how to create a passport photo without making mistakes,
- how to verify a photo before sending it to the Passport Office if it is 100% correct.
Passport photo with your phone
We have prepared for you the 4 main rules. Just apply them and you will quickly have your passport photo ready in no time.
Number 1: Adjust the lights
If possible, plan your photo session during the day and face the window. Your face must be evenly illuminated, no shadows or glares can appear on your skin. Do not use the flash lamp (it causes a red eye effect which is unacceptable). Keep in mind that the photo must be properly exposed, sharp and focused. Overexposed and underexposed photos are automatically rejected during the application process.
Number 2: The background
The background in the Irish passport photo must be light-grey, and free of shadows, patterns and other visible people or objects. PhotoAiD works for you by giving your photo the background it needs.
If you decide to use our photo app, you can take your picture everywhere without even thinking about what is behind you. You can sit in your garden or pose in the street, it really does not matter at all. PhotoAiD app is able to erase the background and change it into one that is clear and plain in colour, which is what is required. Once you choose the template for an Irish passport photo, the artificial intelligence adjusts the size, crop and background colour immediately.
Number 3: Don’t take a selfie
Selfies are recognised as incorrect and rejected. Our tip is to use a tripod and the self-timer function on your camera or smartphone, or ask somebody for help. Don’t use the zoom function; to obtain the required crop (all of the head from the crown, neck and upper part of the shoulders), just keep a distance between you and the camera or smartphone of 1.20 - 2 metres.
Number 4: Pose correctly
The head position and direction of the eyesight is always described in detail. When you want to take the photograph, place the camera at your eye level. The biometric photo must:
- be taken as a front-facing view,
- show all of the face of the candidate clearly,
- have a certain composition (the head must be centred).
In the passport picture:
- your head must not be tilted in any direction,
- you must look straight at the camera,
- your mouth must be closed and your eyes open,
- you must not smile or frown.
Clothes in passport photos
We recommend that you wear a collared shirt, not a tank top. In a tank top or a shirt with a wide neckline, you will look naked because of the way the photo is cropped.
Eyeglasses in the passport photo
In Ireland, you may keep your prescription glasses on but make sure that:
- your eyes are clearly visible - avoid massive frames as they can obscure your eyes.
- there is no reflection on the glasses.
- the glasses are not tinted.
Headwear in the passport photo for Ireland
You must not cover your head while taking a passport photo. Fashionable caps, hats or massive hair accessories are prohibited. However, if you cover your head for religious reasons and you travel internationally wearing a hijab, yarmulke or another piece of headwear that is a part of your religious attire, you are allowed to keep it on in your passport photo. You don’t need to prove your religious affiliation. Remember that your headwear must not obscure your face, so niqabs are prohibited.
Jewellery, piercing and accessories
If your piercing doesn't obscure your face and doesn't give off any glare, you may pose with it. The same applies to jewellery. We do not recommend huge earrings, and we advise you not to wear either headbands or massive, decorative hair accessories as they can cover some of the oval of your face. An elegant necklace, pendant, or a pair of earrings would be a good choice however.
When it comes to hands-free accessories such as wireless headphones, they are not allowed. If you wear medical hearing devices, you don’t need to remove them.
Mistakes that disqualify passport photos
Below we present a list for quick photo quality control. The most common mistakes in passport photos are:
- a size other than 35 x 45 mm,
- shadows on the face,
- wrong background, so use PhotoAiD to remove the background from your photo,
- grimaces or smiling,
- objects or hair obscuring your face,
- a view other than a front-facing one.
You must also remember not to attach a photo which is:
- older than 6 months,
- too dark or too light,
- not printed on high-quality paper,
- cut out from a larger picture,
- edited by computer software.
