HK Passport Photo Requirements
When applying for a Hong Kong passport, you need just one color passport picture or two if you apply on behalf of a child who doesn’t have an HK permanent identity card.
All photos submitted with the HKSAR passport application will be accepted only if they meet the following criteria:
- Head dimensions: 32–36 mm measured from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head
- Size: 40x50 mm (1.57 x 1.96 inches) or 1200 x 1600px for digital images
- Quality: No shadows, glare, blur, or pixelation
- Background: Plain white
- Resolution: 600 DPI
- Posture: Full frontal view
The photo you attach mustn’t have any writing on it. Don’t staple, fold, or clip it to the application. Digital passport photos should be uploaded in a JPEG file no bigger than 5MB.
Note: HK requirements don’t specify how recent your photo should be. However, it must show your current appearance. To ensure this, we recommend taking a picture just before your application, ideally within the last couple of months.
Additional guidelines
Technical specifications aren’t the only criteria you must follow. Below are additional guidelines to consider for your HK passport photo.
Facial features and hair
Your face must be centered and fully visible—ensure the hair doesn’t obstruct any part of your eyes or eyebrows. If you have a voluminous hairstyle or want to keep the hair down, tuck it neatly behind your ears. You can smile gently with your mouth closed (don’t show your teeth).
Clothes and accessories
While the dress code isn’t strictly defined, opt for usual clothing in darker colors, which will contrast with the backdrop. All head coverings (hats, hairbands, etc) are prohibited unless worn for religious reasons.
If you want to accessorize your outfit, avoid big or shiny jewelry. You must also remove facial piercings for the picture.
Glasses
Hong Kong authorities allow you to wear prescription glasses in the picture provided that:
- The frames don’t cover any part of your eyes.
- The lenses aren’t tinted.
- The lenses don’t produce glare, reflections, or cast shadows on your face.
Contact lenses may be an easier alternative, but remember they must match your natural eye color.
