Passport photo-taking tips
Follow these guidelines to create the perfect passport picture.
Consider the distance
Keep your front-facing camera 16–20 inch (40–50 cm) away from the face. For rear cameras, keep a 4–6 foot (1–2 meter) distance.
Keep your head and body straight
Look directly into the camera and avoid tilting your body. Remember, portrait mode is unacceptable for passport photos.
Prepare good lighting
Take your passport photos in a daylight setting, like near a window on a sunny day. Shadows on your face or in the background are not permitted.

Taiwan passport photo: requirements
Every citizen of Taiwan is eligible for a Taiwanese passport that can allow them international travel as well as being used as an identification document. The first thing to do to obtain your new passport would be to get a new passport photo. In this article we talk about the ways to get one.
Passport photo requirements in Taiwan
We’ve gathered a full list of the requirements you need to keep in mind when taking a Taiwanese passport photo and put them in different categories, so it’s easier for you to read them. The first thing to know is that your passport photo cannot be older than 6 months - this is very important as a passport has to show your current look to help border control with identification. You also need to keep in mind that you will need to have at least two identical copies of your passport photo prepared. Below you can find some other valid information on Taiwanese passport photos that you will be required to know and follow.
Taiwan passport photo size
Your photo has to show your whole face and neck and the upper part of the shoulders. The background should be visible behind you. Your head should take up around 70%-80% of the photograph and show some space on each of its sides. Women’s hair is allowed to touch the bottom edge of the picture frame. The photos have to be 35 mm in width and 45 mm in height (which converts to 1.38x1.77 inches in size).
Passport photo technical requirements
Here are some of the technical requirements that you need to follow in the case of the Taiwanese passport photo:
- Your photo has to be taken in good lighting that shows everything but doesn’t unnecessarily brighten the picture (natural light is recommended).
- The paper on which you print has to be good photo quality - remember you need two copies of the passport photo.
- Avoid ink marks as anything that disturbs the integrity of the photograph will be a reason for application rejection.
- The photo has to be in color, with no filters or additional editing, so that it shows your daily look with your natural hair and eye color.
- Make sure that the image you use with your application is sharp and focused - any blurs can be reason for rejection.
- Avoid touch-ups as they are not permitted.
- Your photo has to be in great condition, meaning that there cannot be any tears or stains on it.
Your positioning in the Taiwanese passport photo
A very important thing when it comes to Taiwanese passport photos is your positioning in the picture. Here are some other rules that you should follow:
- Keep yourself straight, with your face turned towards the camera.
- Make sure your mouth is closed and your eyes are fully open.
- Keep a neutral expression as biometric photos don’t allow smiling.
- Look straight into the camera.
- Don’t tilt your head any way, don’t allow your head to go out of the picture frame.
- Remember not to cover any birthmarks, moles, or scars on your face as they are important to the biometric identification processes.
Background and clothing
The color of your background has to be white and without any patterns. It must be properly lit and fully visible behind you. There can’t be any other objects visible in the photo.
There is no dress code when it comes to the Taiwanese passport photo. You just need to avoid white shirts because they will blend with the background. Here are some things to avoid clothing-wise:
- Scarves.
- Dark glasses (prescription glasses are allowed under the condition that they don’t obscure your face or hide your eyes).
- Tinted lenses.
- Any type of head covering (exception made for religious and medical reasons).
- Jewelry covering your face.
The don’ts of Taiwanese passport photos
To finish this guide, we have compiled a short list of very common mistakes when it comes to Taiwanese passport photos, that can get your whole application rejected:
- Using Photoshop (or other similar tools) to beautify your photo or hide scars/birthmarks.
- Tilting your head or other mistakes considering positioning.
- Having a blurry photo or one that is not sharp or in focus.
- Cutting your photo from a larger picture.
Taiwan passport photo summarized
So if you’re looking for a way to take a perfect Taiwanese passport photo, make sure to follow our guide and focus on three important factors: editing, technical requirements, and positioning.
