Passport photo-taking tips
Follow these guidelines to create the perfect passport picture.
Consider the distance
Keep your front-facing camera 16–20 inch (40–50 cm) away from the face. For rear cameras, keep a 4–6 foot (1–2 meter) distance.
Keep your head and body straight
Look directly into the camera and avoid tilting your body. Remember, portrait mode is unacceptable for passport photos.
Prepare good lighting
Take your passport photos in a daylight setting, like near a window on a sunny day. Shadows on your face or in the background are not permitted.

NFA FTA Photos - Requirements
Whether you are submitting a printed NFA ATF application or an eForm, you are required to affix a photo for identification. You can find ATF’s instructions about photo size and more listed below.
Your application photo must be:
- 2 x 2 inches
- Taken within the last year
- Full name and last 4 digits of your SSN written on the back
Additionally, you must submit two (2) copies of your application, which means two photos too. Each photo must be original, i.e., no photocopies are allowed.
Keep in mind that when submitting a paper NFA ATF form, you cannot staple the photo to the application. The sides of the photo should be taped to the form.
Photos for NFA ATF Applications - Other Requirements
As with most official photographs, there are guidelines to follow. Besides the size and recentness of the photo, your facial expression should be neutral, and you have to face the camera.
Moreover, you should not wear any clothes that may be in too much contrast with the background, which should also be neutral. Sunglasses, hats, and other accessories should be removed so your face can be seen clearly and completely.
NFA ATF eForm Photos
You can also apply for your NFA ATF Form 1 (or whichever one you need) online, using eForms. In that case, you need to upload a high-resolution image, with the file size not exceeding 3MB.
If you are applying with an eForm, the affixed photo cannot be a selfie. You should ask another person to help you take your photograph. Moreover, the photo extension should be .jpeg or .jpg.
