Indian Visa Photo Requirements

A photo for a visa to India must be taken in the last six months, measure 2x2 inches (51x51 cm), and be in color. However, there are more requirements to follow.

Here’s what your visa photo must look like:

  • Background: Plain white or light-colored
  • Head measurements: Between 1 and 1⅜ inches (25–35 mm)
  • Eye height: Between 1⅛ and 1.3 inches
  • Position: Full frontal view with eyes open and mouth closed
  • Composition: Ears, neck, and upper shoulders must be visible
  • Quality: Free of blur, shadows, or pixelation
  • Alterations: No digital edits or enhancements
  • Resolution: 300 DPI
  • Print: Thin matte or glossy photo paper

Additional guidelines

Aside from specific visa photo dimensions or background, your picture must adhere to several additional rules:

  • Hair: Ensure the hair doesn’t cover your eyes, eyebrows, or ears. Tie your hair back or tuck it behind your ears.
  • Facial expression: Look directly at the camera and maintain a neutral expression (no smiling).
  • Lighting: The picture must be evenly lit; under or overexposure is unacceptable.
  • Clothes: Uniforms and white-colored clothes are prohibited.
  • Headgear: Allowed only for religious reasons. Ensure the covering doesn’t obstruct your face.
  • Glasses: You can wear thin-framed prescription glasses with transparent lenses. The glasses can’t cause reflections, glare or obscure your eyes.
  • Extra rules: The photo mustn’t have borders.

Indian visa photo requirements for infants

Indian visa photo requirements for children under 10 (including infants) are more relaxed regarding head size and positioning, eye height, and facial expression. For example, an infant’s head can be slightly tilted, and they’re allowed to grimace.

However, only newborns and babies under one can have their eyes closed.

Note also that your child must be the only subject in the photo; you can’t hold the baby, and they’re not allowed to have toys or pacifiers around.

The rest of the rules (size, background color, or quality) are the same as for adult visa photo applicants.

How to Take an Indian Visa Photo at Home?

Taking visa photos with your phone is a breeze; simply follow these tips:

  • Set your camera to the highest resolution. Use the rear camera for best results.
  • Stand approximately 20 inches (50 cm) away from the camera.
  • Ask someone to take a picture of you or place your device on a steady surface, for example, a table.
  • Look for a well-lit spot, preferably by a window. Ensure your face is evenly lit and there are no shadows.
  • Straighten your shoulders and look directly at the lens; don’t smile. Make sure your eyes are leveled with the lens.

Remember that you can take as many pictures as you like until you’re satisfied, so take your time!

How do I upload a digital photo to an Indian visa?

You can complete your visa application online. To do so, you’ll need one digital image that meets the guidelines discussed above and additional Indian e-visa photo requirements:

  • Size: Minimum 350x350 pixels and maximum 1,000x1,000 pixels
  • Format: JPEG
  • File size: 10–300KB

How to upload a photo to an Indian visa application:

  1. Go to the visa application wizard and fill out the form per the instructions.
  2. Click on “Upload image” at the bottom of the page.
  3. Select an Indian e-visa photo from your device.
  4. You should see a preview of your uploaded picture. Click “Confirm.”

Scroll to the bottom of the form—your e-visa photo should appear there.

Done and dusted.

Frequently asked questions

Indian visa photo requirements are similar to those in the US, with several exceptions:

  • Background color: A plain, light-colored backdrop (other than white) is allowed for Indian visa photos.
  • Head size: For a US visa photo, your head must measure 22–35 mm, while for an Indian visa, the size must be between 25 and 35 mm.
  • Glasses: While allowed in the US only under medical conditions, Indian authorities allow you to keep them for the visa photo if you want to.

An Indian e-visa photo must be between 350x350 pixels (minimum) and 1,000x1,000 pixels (maximum). Additionally, you must upload it in a JPEG file of 10–300KB.

You can easily resize your photo for an Indian visa with your phone. Upload a self-portrait to our Indian visa photo resizer, PhotoAiD®, and wait a few seconds for the AI to crop the image to the correct size. You can also order a manual human verification for as little as $0.99.

The only test is when you upload your photo online as part of your application. Once you select a picture, the official tool will check if your image meets Indian e-visa photo requirements such as:

  • Photo size: Between 350x350 px and 1,000x1,000 px
  • File and size: 10–300KB file in a JPEG format
  • Resolution: 300 DPI

If your photo meets these guidelines, it’ll be attached to your application. The immigration office will then check the photo against other requirements.

The easiest way is to take your own picture with our Indian visa photo maker, PhotoAiD®. Our human expert will verify your image within a few minutes and send a digital copy for $0.99 (printed photos are also available as an option).

You can apply online by filling and submitting the visa application form and submitting the required documents, with the correct photographs and proof of residence, sufficient money and an original, valid passport as well as a photocopy of the passport.

The e-Tourist Visa to India is valid for 30 days (double entry), e-Tourist Visa for 365 days (multiple entries), e-Business Visa for 365 days (multiple entries) and e-Conference Visa for 30 days (single entry).

When you take photos for visas, you might repeat some common mistakes, such as tilting your head, a non-front-facing view, patterns or shadows on the background, smile or grimace on the face, your eyes not directly looking at the camera, the face covered by hair, headwear or glare from your glasses.
