Passport photo-taking tips

Follow these guidelines to create the perfect passport picture.

Distance from the camera while taking a passport photo
1

Consider the distance

Keep your front-facing camera 16–20 inch (40–50 cm) away from the face. For rear cameras, keep a 4–6 foot (1–2 meter) distance.

face in front of the camera during passport photo
2

Keep your head and body straight

Look directly into the camera and avoid tilting your body. Remember, portrait mode is unacceptable for passport photos.

Passport photo lighting
3

Prepare good lighting

Take your passport photos in a daylight setting, like near a window on a sunny day. Shadows on your face or in the background are not permitted.

Get to know more about student ID photos

Need more information about getting student ID photos? Read through these frequently asked questions to gain a comprehensive understanding of the subject.

What kind of photo do you need for a student ID?

Student ID photos come in a variety of dimensions and resolutions that are determined by your specific institution of study. For example, Northwestern requires a minimum resolution of 600x600 pixels for student photos while Harvard mandates photos to have a set resolution of 280x296 px.

Nevertheless, most student ID pictures require the photo to:

  • Be taken in color
  • Reflect your current everyday appearance (i.e., no face paint, foreign objects, or non-religious headwear)
  • Have a uniform white or off-white background
  • Show a frontal view of the face with the eyes open
  • Have appropriate lighting

Also, it's a good idea to save your file in JPG format as it is the most universally-accepted format for college ID photos.

Are all student IDs 600x600 pixels?

No, they are not. While some schools have specific resolution requirements, others are less stringent about the photos students can submit. To find out your school’s ID photo requirements, simply Google: “[school’s name] student ID photo” (be sure to omit the quotations when searching).

We’ve also prepared the following chart to showcase the photo guidelines for some popular schools in the US:

School NameResolutionFile Format & Size
Northwestern 600x600 pixels JPG file format, <= 2MB
Harvard280x296 pixelsJPG, PNG, <50Kb
MITMinimum width of 300 pixelsJPG, no size restriction listed
Yale Not listedJPG, PNG, and others, <5 MB
Miami University300x300–800x800 pixelsJPG, no size restriction listed

Can I smile in my student ID photo?

Yes, you can. However, the smile should be natural and not exaggerated.

How to pose for a student ID photo?

Individual schools will have their own explicit rules regarding posing, however, profile poses (i.e., showcasing one side of the face) are universally forbidden—the subject must always be centered and directly facing the camera.

Likewise, photos with inappropriate gestures, expressions, or accessories (sunglasses, hats, or sports team paraphernalia) are not accepted by any schools in the US.

What should I wear for a student ID?

Wear normal everyday clothes or your school uniform (if required by your institution).
