To be honest, we cannot even have a driver’s licence, school diploma or ID without a photograph. That means that at least a couple of times in our life we just must dedicate time, money and energy to prepare a good, professional photo of ourselves. But does it really demand many hours of looking for a photography studio and going there, paying the photographer and investing so much energy in it? Not at all!

Check how to do it wherever and whenever you want and save your money! It is easy and funny!

Passport and ID Photo Tool

To get any official document (passport, ID, different kinds of licences or cards) you must provide an application and a picture. This photo must meet specific requirements to be accepted. What are they? It varies depending on the type of the document, your country and legal provisions. So… is it possible to take a picture at home without the help of a professional photographer? The answer is: yes, of course!

All you need to take your perfect picture to your American passport is:

  • a camera (in the phone, digital camera or tablet, you cannot use your webcam),
  • natural lighting as shadows on your face will make your picture rejected,
  • tripod or another person to help (selfie is not acceptable),
  • list of regulations about size, background, clothing, hair, jewellery etc. which we present below,
  • passport and document photo editor online.

Take a look at our guidelines about pictures dedicated to formal documents. But don’t be worried about all these rules. All you need to do is to take a correct pose and facial expression and do not blink for one second. We will take care of the rest: the proper background, size and crop of photo.

Moreover, if you already have a picture which you like and which meets the requirements in terms of composition, colouring etc., you do not have to do anything but upload it to the photo maker and wait for two seconds. Or maybe three, but we promise - no longer! We are here for you, just check our online photo tool and spend your saved time and money on whatever makes you happy!

Passport Photo Online

If you are planning an international trip, you need a passport. Requirements for passport photos are mainly similar in most countries, they differ only in details such as size of the photo or dimensions of the face in the image. Most governments nowadays issue biometric documents and it does not apply only to passports but also to IDs, driving licences etc. Biometric photos in passports must satisfy certain strict requirements and it is the responsibility of an applicant to know and meet them all.

If you apply for a British passport, you must attach two identical photos 35x45 mm or at least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall in the case of a digital picture. But demanded dimensions are different f.ex. in the US where they want 2x2 inches photos. Anyway, the good news is that you do not even need to know it. Our passport photo maker automatically adjusts the size of your uploaded picture to the requirements of the country you have chosen.

Visa Photo

If you want to travel internationally, sometimes you may need a visa - entry permission allowing you to cross a border of an indicated country for an indicated period. Visa always contains a photo of its holder and this picture must - exactly as a passport photo - meet certain requirements.

Particular countries have different specifications for a visa photo and sometimes applicants made mistakes which cost them a refusal or a delay in the application process. But if you prepare your visa photo online with our tool, you may be 100% sure that your photo will be perfect. Never mind if you want to apply for a Chinese, Canadian, Japanese or Russian visa- we know exactly how each of those photos must look! Give us a try and check what we have for you:

Photos for ID Cards

If you are an adult, you probably already have your ID card but maybe you need a renewal? In everyday life we use many cards containing our photo and personal data - identity cards, membership cards, licenses etc. You need a special picture for EAD Card or the US citizen application, also for permanent residence card, a leave, pass and many others. General rule says that an official photograph must be current - it means that it must not be older than 6 months (sometimes is 3 months or even one). Does it mean that you have to go to a photography studio every time you obtain a new document? Absolutely no! It is enough if you dedicate a couple of minutes (or even seconds if you are really in rush) to take a new picture. It costs much less than in a professional studio or photo booth and you have many other advantages. Just keep reading to find more information!

How to take a passport photo at home?

We have a pleasure to present you a short handbook which helps people all over the world in preparation of an ideal picture for formal documents.

Number 1: Catch the light!

Professional photographers agree that the most favourable light is a natural one. So if possible, plan your “photo session” during the day. Keep in mind that your face must be evenly illuminated on both sides. A picture must be free of shadows, your features must be clearly visible. The photo needs to be focused, sharp and properly exposed. Overexposed and underexposed images will be rejected.

Number 2: Adjust the background.

The background in most formal photos must be white, semi-white or light-grey. It depends on the country and the type of document. It always must be free of shadows, patterns and other visible people or objects. But you do not need to paint the wall in your house right now to obtain a demanded color. There is an easier way: you can take a picture anywhere, even in your kitchen or patio with a view on mountains - no problem! Our photo app will automatically remove an unsuitable background and exchange it into a plain one in color you wish. You do not even need to be aware which color of the background is demanded for a given document - we know that and we work for you!

Number 3: Selfie - yes or not?

Definitely not! Selfies are mostly not meeting requirements and are the majority of rejected images. It is a much better idea to ask somebody for help or use a tripod. Remember that the head and neck (optionally also the upper part of the shoulders) must be visible in the picture so the recommended distance between you and a camera or smartphone is between 1,20 and 2 metres.

Number 4: Composition and head position

The composition, head position and direction of eyesight is described in detail in every guidelines for a given document photo. But there are some universal rules such as:

  • The face must be positioned in the central spot of the image.
  • The head must not tilt in any direction.
  • The photographed person must look straight at the camera.
  • The mouths must be closed and the eyes open.
  • The neutral facial expression is a requirement (no smile, no grimaces)
  • The whole face must be clearly visible

What to wear for a passport photo?

You will travel with your new passport for the next ten years and this is a century in fashion trends! Therefore, choose some ageless outfit. A classic button down shirt, a collared shirt, a V-neck dress or even your favourite t-shirt will be fine. This is not an official rule, but a good advice. In a passport photo, only your face and area around the collarbone will be seen, so it’s not recommended to wear a tank top or a shirt with a wide neckline if you don’t want to look like naked.

If you apply for the US document and documents of many other countries, you are not allowed to wear any kind of uniform or clothes resembling uniform. It means that camouflage patterns on clothes are not acceptable.

There are no other rules about colouring but we recommend to wear color different than white just to look better on the light background. Our tip: choose a color you always get compliments on when you wear it!

You will show this picture to people for the next ten years, so make sure you are happy with it!

Who can wear eyeglasses in the passport photo?

Again, it depends on the law in a given country. The general rule everywhere is that sunglasses and tinted glasses are forbidden in the official photo.

But rules differ f.ex. in the US and European countries.

For the US passport or visa photo glasses you wear everyday must be taken off unless they cannot be removed for medical reasons (e.g.: you recently had an ocular surgery and the eyeglasses are necessary to protect your eyes). In these circumstances you must submit a medical statement signed by a medical professional or health practitioner explaining the reason why you cannot remove your glasses.

In many other countries (e.g. in the European Union) the prescription eyeglasses are accepted but make sure that:

  • your both pupils are clearly visible - the frames of the glasses must not cover your eyes.
  • there is no glare on glasses.
  • There is no shadow or refraction from glasses on your face.

Can you wear a hijab, hat or another head covering?

Yes, but only if they do not obscure your face below the hairline and do not cover your oval. In some countries (e.g. the US) if you want to keep your headgear in the passport photo, you are asked to prove that it is a part of recognized, traditional religious attire. You must submit a signed document that you wear items like hijab, yarmulke or hat for religious reasons. Niquabs covering most of the face are not allowed. Every fashion head coverings such as caps or fancy hats are forbidden.

Jewelry and accessories in ID and passport photos

In most of the countries small jewelry in the official photo is allowed. You can choose an elegant necklace or pendant or a pair of earrings on condition that they not “touch” the oval of your face. So, huge earrings are not recommended, don’t wear headbands or massive, decorative hair accessories either.

If you have a facial piercing and removing it may cause problems, you can leave it. Just make sure that the piercing does not give a glare on your face.

All hands-free devices such as wireless headphones and others are not allowed everywhere. In most of the countries instead medical hearing devices are allowed.

The most commonly made mistakes in visa/passport photos

While taking a photo ourselves, we risk making a mistake that may cause a rejection of our application. But the times of visits in professional photography studios are going by. Now we can do more and more things via the Internet, also professional photos to documents with 100% warranty of acceptance. It is cheaper, faster and less stressful. We do not need to go anywhere, waste time and money for driving. But how to be absolutely sure that our picture is correct? Below we present a list for a quick photo quality control. Take a look and check if you meet all requirements.

The most common mistakes in rejected photos are:

  • an incorrect size - check on the official website for the needed document which size it is, do not assume that it is always 2x2 inches.
  • bad lighting - shadows on the face disqualify a picture so look after the evenly distributed illumination and preferably a day light.
  • wrong background - forbidden color, patterns or spots in the background cause an automatic refusal, also visible objects or other people.
  • smile - sounds weird but this is true. Do not smile in the passport photo. Even a little bit.
  • hair or head gear obscuring face features - you may have your hair down but make sure that your face is well visible. If you keep your head covering for religious reasons, the rule is the same and also verify if it is not necessary to provide any kind of document proving your religious affiliation.
  • head tilted or semi-profile - only one correct view is en-face with a head not tilted and sight directed straight to the camera lens.

Other fails in passport and visa photos are less common but also disqualifying. Remember not to attach a photo which is:

  • older than indicated in the specification
  • overexposed or underexposed
  • printed on your home ink printer or on low quality paper
  • not original (cut out from a larger picture or interfered in any way)
