Right background and lighting for an Indian passport photo

The background color for the passport photo should be plain white or off-white. The light on the face should be even and balanced. Photograph tone should be continuous. Three-point balanced lighting should be used for capturing the facial features clearer.

Avoid shadows in the background and the face. Do not mask the natural facial features with inappropriate filters or any enhancing or softening tools. Also, fluorescent lighting and over-exposed or under-exposed are a big no for Indian passport photos.

Passport photo printing quality

Print your Indian passport photos on thin photo paper or stock with clear and continuous tone quality. You can use both digital and conventional methods of printing. Facial features should be easily detectable. Therefore, high-resolution photography and printing are advisable. The photograph should fit the box.

Avoid the pixel or dot patterns in digital prints. There should not be any scratches or marks on the photograph. Photos should not be in computer prints. It should be clean and not signed or sealed. Do not create Indian passport photos by cutting from group photos.

Eyeglasses and head coverings in an Indian passport photo

Prescription glasses and religious head coverings are acceptable in Indian passport photos. But with certain guidelines. The spectacle frame should not affect any facial features and the eyes should be visible through the glasses. The top of the forehead and bottom of the chin, along with both the facial edges, should be visible even with head coverings.

How to pose for an Indian passport photo

The Indian passport office is strict about passport size photos. Neutral facial expression with eyes open is required. The face should be in the center of the frame and must be visible from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin and from edge to edge. The height of the head must be 1 inch to 1‐3/8 inches and the eye height should be between 1‐1/8 inches to 1‐3.

Avoid side poses and no exaggerated smiles or filters. Eyes should not look side-ways, upwards, or downwards. Your image should be straight and identifiable. Do not cover the face with hair, shawl, or excessive pieces of jewelry.

Exceptions for children and babies in Indian Passport Photos

Children under ten years of age and also babies have some relaxed requirements for their Indian passport photo. Children under the age of 10 have relaxed rules regarding the height of the face and position of the eyes. Infants under one year are not required to have their eyes open. Babies and infants have more relaxed necessities concerning facial expression, the position of the face, eyes, and the line of sight.

However, a clear frontal photo with a neutral facial expression and mouth closed is required for the children. The background should be clear from other people, chairs backs, or toys.
