Unlike many other countries, Mexico doesn’t require your passport to be valid for six months after your departure date. As per the Mexican Immigration Authorities, you are good to go as long as your passport is valid during your stay and has at least one blank page for a stamp. 

But—

Does this rule on passport expiration apply no matter how you enter Mexico? 

Well, sometimes, more than a valid passport is required. Other times, you might not even need one.

Traveling to Mexico by sea

First things first:

Travelers arriving in Mexico by sea have several options, and it’s important to understand each one:

Cruise

For standard cruises, the usual rules for Mexican passport expiration apply. You’ll need a valid passport with at least one blank page for a stamp.

Closed-loop cruise

For cruises starting and ending at the same US port, Americans don’t need passports, though it’s wise to have one or at least some form of ID or birth certificate. Check with your cruise organizer for any additional requirements.

Private boat

Traveling to Mexico on a private vessel? A valid US passport card is enough if you stay on the water. However, you’ll need a US passport book to go ashore.

Note: US citizens generally don’t need to show any travel documents if they only stop by a port city (like Veracruz or Altamira) for a brief visit.

Traveling to Mexico by land

While arriving in Mexico by air or sea typically requires only a valid passport (or a state-issued photo ID for certain cruises), entering via a land border involves extra steps.

In addition to having an ID, the Mexican government mandates that tourists present a tourist entry permit known as Forma Migratoria Multiple (FMM).

US citizens will need an FMM when:

• Staying in Mexico for over 72 hours.
• Traveling more than 12 miles inland from the border.

You can obtain an FMM in the immediate border area (note that you must pay for your permit in cash). Alternatively, you can apply for FMM online before your trip to avoid long lines at border control.

Can I Travel Back to the US With a Less Than 6 Months Passport?

Mexico’s passport expiration policies permit entry even if your travel document is valid for less than six months.
