In 2012, the trio of the Młodzki brothers—Tomasz, Marcin, and Rafał—merged their talents in philosophy, mathematics, IT, and law to create FunFotos.

Inspired by the photo booths portrayed in movies like “Amélie,” they set up their first booth in Złote Tarasy, Warsaw’s bustling shopping mall, inviting visitors to capture joyful, quirky moments.

As the network of booths expanded to over 70 locations, the company secured an investment of over $300,000 from Inovo Venture Partners, a VC firm. But despite the burgeoning success, the novelty of fun photos began to dim. After all, how many selfies with silly hats or fake mustaches do you need?

That’s when we shifted our focus.

Within a month, our small team prototyped a passport photo booth that let customers take photos for official documents. While this addition propelled us into a new market, it also arrived when COVID-19 was about to click into the frame.

As lockdowns closed shopping centers and passport photo booths, the world turned online, seeking alternatives to avoid crowded places. Rising to the challenge, we engineered two online passport photo services—PhotoAiD and Passport Photo Online—allowing users to take compliant biometric pictures from the comfort of their homes.

In cooperation with the University of Warsaw, we designed cutting-edge AI algorithms that ensured each photo met regulatory standards while incorporating a human verification step to guarantee acceptance.

In retrospect, PhotoAiD and Passport Photo Online were a digital lifeline, expanding our reach to over 150 countries across five continents and revolutionizing how passport and ID photos are taken.
